Supermodels past and present battle for supremacy at the opera

Famous beauties of the last five decades took to the red carpet last night for opening night gala at New York's Metropolitan opera.

Supermodels and actresses aged from 70 to 35 dressed in their finery for a night of culture at Manhattan's Lincoln Center.

Former fitness queen Jane Fonda, a L'Oreal spokesmodel, looked over a decade younger than her 70 years as she posed in a classic white shirt and sweeping black skirt with two friends.

Sixties siren: Forty years after Barbarella, Jane Fonda (with friends Robin Laughin and Jane Buffett) looks sensational at 70

Forty years after bewitching male fans with Barbarella, Fonda is continuing to defy the ageing process thanks to a healthy diet and exercise.

Fonda is determined to age gracefully in the public eye and give mature women a role model.

She said: 'I'm going to try to organise other women in my profession and my friends to say no to the duck lips and getting rid of the wrinkles.'

Just three years younger and looking equally as good was Bonnie & Clyde star Faye Dunaway.

Ladies in black: Faye Dunaway, 67, goes for a silk halterneck gown, while Christie Brinkley, 54, goes for an Eighties-style mermaid gown

The Oscar-winning actress went for full-on glamour in a ruffled, halterneck silk dress and matching stole.

Also going for black and revisiting her Eighties heyday was Christie Brinkley in a strapless black mermaid gown.

Brinkley, who divorced her fourth husband Peter Cook earlier this year after a bitter court battle, added some extra glamour with matching gloves and a ruby red clutch bag.

While the more mature celebrities opted for black, their younger counterparts appeared to be following a trend for champagne colours.

Catwalking down the carpet: Helena Christensen, 39, and Molly Sims, 35, went for youthful, champagne gowns

Representing the 1990s was Danish supermodel-turned-photographer Helena Christensen, 39, who wore a sweeping beige gown with matching heels and clutch.

Finally, Noughties model-turned-actress Molly Sims, 35, went for a strapless, flowing champagne coloured gown with delicate beading.

Prior to landing a role on hit U.S. TV show Las Vegas, Sims starred in campaigns for Cover Girl and Old Navy as well as appearing in five swimsuit issues of Sports Illustrated magazine.

Girl's night out: Dame Helen Mirren and Mamma Mia star Christine Baranski cuddle up on the red carpet

Also in attendance to watch soprano Renee Fleming sing excerpts from Traviata, Manon and Capriccio, was Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren, who posed on the red carpet with Mamma Mia actress Christine Baranski.

The Queen actress, 63, was head to toe in purple in a long gown and matching bolero.

Other guests include former E.R. actress Julianna Marguiles, 42, and former U.S. politican and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Henry Kissinger, 85, with his wife Nancy.
