Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire Officially Returning for Spider-Man 4?!
The moment I walked out after seeing Spider-Man 3 last year, I knew it was over. There was no way that they could continue this franchise after such a lackluster conclusion. But I guessed wrong - and as we all know, Sony is hard at work on Spider-Man 4. In a surprising announcement today, Nikki Finke on Deadline Hollywood reports that both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire will be returning to Spider-Man 4. The deal apparently came together recently, because Finke says that a few weeks ago "Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey's potential replacements." Finke also adds that "the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time." Whoa…
When Sony confirmed that they were working on Spider-Man 4 for 2011, the speculation was that either Sam Raimi or Tobey Maguire would not return, considering both of them have spent nearly 9 years of their life on Spider-Man already. Finke does say that there is no deal for Kirsten Dunst's return yet, but Sony said they "would never recast her." As for the focus of this film, apparently Sony isn't going to go the dark route. "Sam Raimi made the first serious superhero movie, and others followed. The difference between Spider-Man and Batman is that Batman is dueling with a dark side of himself, and that's not what Peter Parker's struggle is. Peter Parker has no dark side of himself." I thought that's exactly what the third movie is about? Maybe they finally learned from their mistakes?
As for the villain and early details on the story, Finke only provides this tidbit: "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing it." The script for this sequel was penned by James Vanderbilt, of The Rundown and Fincher's Zodiac previously. We also mentioned this at the start, but I'd say it's definitely worth mentioning again. "The studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'" Two more back-to-back Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire?! I'm not sure whether I'm excited by this news or just baffled. What do you think?
